May 2007 - n° 5
A Word from the President

In the recent volume of the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry you will find the WFSBP Guidelines for Biological Treatment of Unipolar Depressive Disorders in Primary Care. The presented Treatment Guidelines are an updated version, but especially designed for colleagues working in primary care. This is of great importance, as the majority of patients with depression tend to seek the help of a general practitioner and are only occasionally seen by specialists. With this comprehensive manual which includes numerous recommendations the WFSBP aims to provide up-to-date treatment options and thus to further improve treatment for patients world-wide and to spread knowledge also in countries with limited continuing education possibilities.

I wish to thank Michael Bauer, Chairman of the WFSBP Task Force on Unipolar Depressive Disorders, and the members of the respective Task Force for their superb work and ongoing engagement. Further I wish to thank Hans-Jürgen Möller, chief editor of the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, for his dedication to develop WFSBP Treatment Guidelines. We hope that we can present you further WFSBP Treatment Guidelines in the near future.

As with all WFSBP Treatment Guidelines and Consensus Papers, they are made available as free download on the official website www.wfsbp.org.

Sincerely yours,

Siegfried Kasper, MD
WFSBP President
