August 2006 - n° 3
A Word from the President

On behalf of the whole WFSBP Leadership, I hope you have enjoyed a wonderful Summer and that this new academic year is starting off positively after a well deserved break.

As you may have noticed, the World Federation's activities have kept moving forward very nicely all over the Summer months, with the continuation and advancement of many excellent initiatives, with, among other things, the preparation of the Santiago and Paris Congresses, lively debates and discussions on the WFSBP on-line Feature Forums, and an increased communication with the Leaders of our eminent Member Societies.

We warmly invite you to come visit us at the WFSBP booth at the ECNP Congress in Paris (September 16-20, 2006) and the Congress of the Asociación Argentina de Psiquiatras-AAP from (October 3-6, 2006), where we will be available to discuss these developments personally with you and share ideas on the future of our Federation.

We look forward to possibly meeting you at one of these congresses!

Sincerely yours,

Siegfried Kasper, MD
WFSBP President

Treatment Guidelines
WFSBP Task Forces are a privileged platform for the Federation to produce scientific statements meant to help the worldwide community make the best decisions in treating patients. So far, WFSBP Treatment Guidelines have focused on 4 main psychiatric conditions: Bipolar Disorders; Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder; Unipolar Depressive Disorder.

All the WFSBP Guidelines are systematically published in The World Journal of Biological Psychiatry and are also available on the WFSBP web site to all visitors as a free resource to improve patient care and help overcome psychiatric disorders.

It is the World Federation's intention to keep developing more Treatment Guidelines in the future and advance care all over the globe.

Feature Forums
We have just launched this month's exciting WFSBP Feature Forum entitled: “Do we need CATIE for antidepressants?”, authored by specialist Robertas Bunevicius M.D. (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA).

In the battle to cure depressive disorders (as you will read once you click on the Feature Forum banner below) the question as to whether “one antidepressant for all depressions” or “a specific antidepressant for a specific depression” remains unsolved. Would the proposed head-to-head CATIE-like comparison of antidepressants provide the answer?

“Do we need CATIE for antidepressants?”

We invite you to respond by sharing your views, expertise and experience today!

Join the debate now by reviewing this month's Feature and posting your opinion and thoughts directly in the Forum zone. Only by stimulating the debate can we hope to address this unresolved yet crucial question:

For those of you who are as of yet unfamiliar with the Feature Forums debate arena, why risk missing out? Please either click directly on the banner above (or visit and bookmark our website www.wfsbp.org) and select the menu tab "About Feature Forums", for further information.

Our community looks forward to reading your contribution as a regular visitor to the WFSBP Feature Forums!
